My name is Michael Altrogge and I am the Commanding Officer for the River Valley
Young Marines. The River Valley Detachment of the Young Marine was recently formed here in the Fort Smith area. We are looking for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and the completion of high school interested in becoming one of the few, the proud, a Young Marine.
The Young Marines have been officially recognized as the focal organization for the Marine Corps' contribution to Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts. The Young Marines focuses on a drug free lifestyle and mentoring all Young Marines to become well rounded individuals eager and ready to meet the challenges of life today and in the future.
We are not a recruiting force for the U.S. Marine Corps. The goal of the program is to instill the core values of the Marines: honor, courage and commitment to each of its members. It is with pride in their accomplishment that Young Marines develop the self esteem that will carry them into success in the future. During their 26 hour of "boot camp" orientation the recruit will learn Young Marine subjects ranging from history, physical fitness and customs and courtesies to close order drill and military rank structure. At the end of their orientation they will "graduate" and begin to wear their uniform with pride.
After they graduate they continue a character-building process that can begin a lifelong pursuit as productive and contributing citizens in their communities. They will attend monthly drills and be eligible to learn new skills, earn rank and ribbons. Unit activities range from first aid, drug resistance education and leadership training to participation in parades and community events, as well as special field trips and encampments.
School attendance and acceptable grades are expected by our Young Marines. Special accommodations are made for those who play in sports or band as well as young people with disabilities. Our first "boot camp" will begin in September.
